After a lot of thinking and reading, I cannot help but write a blog on the new show, Revenge Body, by Khloe Kardashian. Someone as famous as a Kardashian can set a very, very bad example for young girls, emphasizing that our self worth is solely based on physical appearances. A popular question that Khloe asks her contestants is, “Who do you want to get revenge on?” This is an absurd question to ask because your body is not a weapon and should never be viewed as one.
People are brainwashed into believing that if they lose 50 pounds or hit their goal weight, all of their problems will suddenly disappear. This is not the case! No matter what you are going through in life – whether it is hurt, heartbreak, insecurity or depression – it’ll all still be there no matter what weight you are at. There is no escaping your problems: they are things that you need to work on. They will not go away on their own.
Now, I’m not saying exercise and living a healthy lifestyle aren’t good for your mental health. They’re great! But, they should be done only for you – not for anyone else and especially not to get “revenge on an ex”. I personally feel that over the past year, we as a society have made great leaps in body positivity and fostering self love for young girls (and boys!); however, this show just feels like a major step back. I cannot bring myself to watch it, but I hope for its viewers sakes, there is more to the show than just the idea of “revenge” and physical appearance. We shouldn’t ever forget that we are so much more than what we look like on the outside.
